Playing with the Frequencies - Another Roman Silver from our Hoard

Post by fred » Mon Jan 14, 2019 6:34 pm

Today I was at a loose end so I decided to put in a few hours in the sun to practice with the Nox and the large coil and also to experiment with the single frequencies. As I needed 'iffy' signals the hoard site was a natural.

Our little hoard site hasn't produced a coin since the Spring despite being hammered with a Deus, a CTX with stock and large coils and an Equinox also with both coils. There are no positive signals left for 50 metres in any direction so we had rather assumed that it had been worked out and hadn't paid it too much attention recently.

https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts ... /id/842335

As expected signals were virtually non existent but after about half an hour I got a minus 5 signal with just a hint of 20 odd in multifrequency when winkled. This would probably not have normally been a digger but as it was within the main coin concentration I had to give it a go. There was nothing in the first plug and no sound from the carrot (I'd grabbed the wrong pinpointer) so I took out another smaller plug from the bottom of the hole. I then got a signal from within the sidewall about 9 inches down and careful excavation revealed a siliqua on edge. I think that it's one of Valens (Spink 620) so right in the middle of the other coins.

I suspect that the iffy nature of the signal was due to the extreme depth of such a small coin and it being on edge. The fact that I dug it at all was down to practice and experience with the Nox. Afterwards I tried playing around with the frequencies but so far I have not been able to come to any firm conclusions other than there really aren't many targets left in the area. I doubt if I got 20 signals in 3 hours and most of them were on other parts of the site. :D

Well done Fred. Good work. I’m sure the idea of scrapping a foot off, if they are agreeable will produce lots more.

Lovely coin, well found and saved ::g ::g

I like your thinking on the confidence that you have found what there is there, once you have confidence in the machine and its working to its best it makes detecting so much more enjoyable.

Also to adjust settings knowing they give a little extra to its maximum depth potential, you can have the satisfaction if something is there you will find it.

Regards Steve

Well found, and at such a depth. They sure make a lovely sound when they get nearer the coil.
If you get any sound other than a full buzz on a ground that has produced then it's worth digging.

A good account of the events Fred which I have to say, have proved well worth the effort as it's an extremely nice coin. I suppose knowing the 'Nox' as well as you do, coupled with the decision to dig when some might have walked away, is deserving of the result, a real beauty ::g Regards ss47
