Could this Be Roman?

Post by Batman » Mon Jan 14, 2019 6:51 pm

Maybe this is asking a lot but i would like some thoughts on it. I found this item some years ago on a Roman site with my at the time detector C Scope 3mx, it came up within feet of a roman Republic silver denarius and a small dolphin brooch.I know there is not a lot to go on but could it be a Roman Disc or Plate Brooch? It still has the gold gilding around the edge in parts which actually shows up better than the photo suggests.I am going to run it past my Flo anyway next time we meet which will be approx. 6 weeks.I would be grateful for any opinions.

It looks like a large gilded button but it would really need to be handled to be sure. :D

Going by the stain dead centre of the second picture, I too would say it was a button, and that is where the loop was once attached. ::g

Thanks for your reply Fred, my first thoughts were button but the context of the other finds around it plus the size of it has always got me thinking maybe there is more to it than a gilded button. ::g

Obviously having handled it, it feels too thin to be a button. :-/
