Finds with the Nexus and puzzling stone.

Post by stormcrow » Mon Jan 14, 2019 6:51 pm

Hi
First proper outing with the Nexus standard MP.
Most of the finds were run of the mill as pictured. until I got a half red reading on the DDM meter started digging, took out a good five or six inch of soil, detector said still in the hole. I retrieved
the spindle whorl from at least five inch above the length of the pin pointer. my first decorated one. I've found plenty of the plain ones but this was on my bucket list, very happy with it.
If anyone out there can give a ruff idea of age that would be very much appreciated.

Then while taking a leak I noticed this cap stone with what looks like the shape of an axe head thats been chiseled out of it. Any ideas would also be very much appreciated.

All the best
Johnny..

If it is a mould the hole might be the significant bit of it. It looks like it was for the dowel that ensured that the other bit of the mould fitted correctly. That is potentially very important and you should really make your FLO aware of it. ::g

PS Lovely spindle whorl too.

That's a nice spindle whorl. I've found a few now but not been lucky enough for a patterned one. Well found ::g

loom weights usually have a iron hook to keep tension in the warp. This is a spindle whorl. Most newcomers struggle at first ID'ing but it'll all fall into place. Someone once told me they'd found a spear point and it was a ranging rod tip, or did I laugh.

Lovely spindle whorl, I would be pleased with that ::g

That stone is a great find as well, your FLO will like seeing that it will make a change from staring at metal blobs. Don't forget the tape measure across it when you photograph it again.

Thanks Lowland. I was stunned when I realised what it could be. I'm returning this weekend to take some decent shots and I'll pass it on to the FLO after speaking first to the land owner.
All the best and happy hunting.

Thanks Ray that's a good idea I'll definitely take the tape measure now you mention it.
Coins are coins but when you find something personnel like a spindle whorl or any other functional relic it makes the find a little more special.

A nice spindle whorl you found there. The hole in it looks larger than usual, that or the other finds are small. x; ::g

Hi Steve Thanks for commenting. I'm going to speak with the landowner first about the stone, if he's happy with me contacting the FLO about it and telling him its possible they might want to remove it to study, then I've got respect what ever decision he makes. I've known the guy for years I'm sure he's going to be ok about it. Thanks again Steve all the best mate.
