A nice little hinge.

Post by Easylife » Wed Apr 17, 2019 2:06 am

Found on pasture at 6”. Made of copper alloy with signs of silver plating noticeably more preserved at the overlap though pics don't show it. Surprisingly the hinge worked freely as soon as it came out of the ground but the whole thing was quite mangled, but fortunately being very malleable it straightened out quite well between a couple of wooden blocks in the vice. The two patterned sides when both in view give a clue as to the intended closed position. It looks more shiny in reality. :D
I'm guessing it's post-medieval and perhaps from a small box lid or similar but I can't find a match, so any ideas?

I think I've just about sussed out Flickr, my first photo hosting from it, very simple when you know how, but not so obvious! x;

From a jewellery box, cigar box or the like. These things came in a huge variety of designs. It looks like stamped brass so relatively modern, Viccy onwards I guess. :D
