Very fine gold, a button and a seal matrix...

Post by HolzHammer » Wed Apr 17, 2019 1:41 pm

Afternoon All,
I finally got my mojo back and found a couple of bits which aren't fire arms related!
On an acre or two of land used for cover crop and recently shallow ploughed, Herts... I wasn't particularly hopeful but a few nice bits turned up fairly regularly including a few lead weights, bits of prob post medieval copper alloy and a Charles II farthing in not very good condition.

The best among them this seal matrix, a very fine gold ring - no markings at all, and a nice little one piece conical, nippled copper alloy button... any chance of aging any of these? I have a book on buttons but find it very complicated to use! Anyway any knowledge gratefully accepted and much appreciated.

I'm going back after lunch!! With suncream, hooray - the gold old days are back!

All the B
Alexander

Thanks Shaneb3, I am trying to gently toothpick a bit more of the "brown" out but am being very careful as I'm not sure how much is dirt and how much that colour of degrading bronze you see on roman coins...

Help reading seal matrix please

Post by HolzHammer » Wed Apr 17, 2019 7:23 pm

Evening All,
Here is a better image ( and a "flip") showing the lettering on the seal matrix I found earlier and I am appealing to my betters for help deciphering the lettering as I am no expert in "Olde" fonts!
As far as I can tell, with the benefit of a magnifying glass and being able to see it real life, I think I can see:

*Si: DOHSTBELAR (not sure of the two following symbols/letters.

I presume the main image depicts a Castle o ra Keep or some such thing... any knowledge much appreciated and gratefully accepted!

see a few on the database with a castle on them

most have castle type word in the legend

such as https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/33663

working back from the L you could push it to be fairly close but doesn't seem quite right :(

I think I have been on a red herring

Hard work as it’s only just been ploughed though it’s really soft sandy gravelly soil...anyway a bit of Roman bracelet, Edward penny and not a bad Lizzie sixpence .... but I’m going to leave it now till it gets knocked right down before I break an ankle...can’t wait! Hope all good your end
