Mount(?) for id?

Post by Rocketstu » Wed Apr 17, 2019 7:16 pm

Dug this one today in ploughed, around 6in down. Came up at 31 with the Equinox 600. Gold gilt remains on the face.
The field is associated with a probable Roman habitation (lots of Roman coins found over the years along with associated finds) with a good number of pottery fragments on the surface but the area can produce anything from Iron Age to late medieval.
Not seen anything like this before. Any ideas?

It has the look of the kind of faces you see in Saxon button brooches. (It isn't a button brooch of course, but the face has a similar vibe.)
