Strange pin like object for ID please

Post by kenleyboy » Fri May 17, 2019 10:05 pm

Had this out this evening using Q40 jewellery mode sensitivity 70 .Raptor coil and found about 6 inches down .
serrated pin .jpg
It looks to have a screw type thread at first glance but they are not threaded like a screw , instead small ringed segments all the way along .There is a hole in the ball end [ full of soil ] so was attached to something .Any ideas before it goes in the scrap box .

Many thanks

I’ve seen wood nails with a universal screw socket at the end much like that. Think they were for MDF panels.

Right or wrong it’s a scrapper I think ::g

Shades of green waste there, I think, Paul.

Had a field full of bits of MDF and door fittings a few years back but I remember those sort of screw nails from when we fitted our kitchen.

found a few of these over the years , usually viccy/1920's nsounds ightsoil type sites , always thought they were plug chain posts , draw handle posts seems quite likely

Strongly reminiscent of a top cock screw from a flintlock firearm (often dismissed as furniture fittings), but it's unlikely to be one of those if there's no trace of a helical thread.

But drawer handle fittings have a coarse helical thread to attach the nut to secure! x;

Many thanks for everyones input . Bazzerhuts possible flintlock screw lifted my hopes but there is no collar beneath the ball .I have to admit that when it first came out I thought it was possibly a hair or brooch type pin with a bit of decoration along the shank but a gentle clean has revealed the pattern to be a thread .
Furniture drawer handle post seems more plausible .I have found on occasions draw handles with the little rounded nipples either end which slot into the hole of a post and this does look very much like part of those fittings .

Thank you everyone , very much appreciated .

Now I’ve looked at your second pic and in a different light I can see the hole is actually on the side.
So I concede to the more popular ID of a drawer handle part. ::g

Always worth posting photos of these mystery items, Paul.
Ladybird was also right in her reply, " Think they were for MDF panels ", everyone on here is a member of the MDF panel.
Lets have some more artifacts for our perusal and thoughts.
Cheers,
Dave.
