ID help please - not metal!!

Post by tigerseeker » Sun Jun 09, 2019 8:38 pm

Evening all,

Hope you all have had a fruitful weekend.

With one eye on the weather I decided to venture out after a couple of weeks off and after a couple of rings pulls B| B| I found an 1898 farthing and shortly after a 1940 something penny so well happy! Coins are always the best for me regardless of age.

Anyway 2 strides on from the farthing I spotted this on the surface:

What caught my eye were the lines you can see on the first image. When I picked it up it felt like stone but stone that had been 'worked'.

Any ideas?

I had my Garrett Euroace in my hand but it provided no assistance on this occasion, scale is in millimetres.

Thanks!

Could it be an animal bone and the scratches are butchery marks?

I think a few of us have thought‘Stone Age axe’ when looking at what Mother Nature has done.
Easy to be fooled. I’ve still got my example. Yours is, I think, another natural one. It doesn’t look like the right sort of stone, though not easy to tell from pics.
Not totally a no no though. Hunter gatherers were much more inventive than we give them credit for.
They always make a nice feature in a rock garden though :D

Yep - it was said that it 'feels' like a stone', but is it as heavy as a stone of the equivalent size? I'm still thinking it could be a bone - they only take about 10000 years to petrify...
