Strange buckle for id and approx age and poss jewelry

Post by DingDong »

Hi all,

2 finds which I need help with.

Both found on 400yr old pasture about 8" deep, in each case both parts were found in the same relative hole, ie 4 pieces 2 holes. Found using my ORX.

1st item looks like two bits of jewelry if correct any idea of age

2nd item sort of looks like buckle but the pivoting pin bit does look like it would go through a belt it is very thin material (sheet not cast) and there is a rivet in it at the pointed end, it is also longer than the buckle in each direction, so no idea what it is or what approx age.

Any help much appreciated

The buckle looks like it was riveted to a strap, so a bit different to the usual. x;

easylife,

I see what you mean and if the other end of the strap went through the buckle you would have an adjustable loop

like it thanks

The top bit looks like the remains of a fob sea of late Georgian onwards date. ::g

The lower bit looks like a Stuart period buckle with an improvised buckle plate on it. However, the buckle plate looks Medieval, and by Stuart times the use of buckle plates was less common than previously. That throws up other options: it could be a Stuart product of necessity, the two bits may not actually belong with each other or perhaps the whole thing might be a bit earlier. A side view of the buckle might clear the date up. :D

Hi Fred,

Looked at images of georgian seals, don't reckon it is part of one, the thickness is a mac of 1mm

Re buckle side view two images attached.

Mods please note the scale is shown on the opening post images, hope that is ok

Thanks for the new photos. The buckle doesn't really look like a Stuart period one so I would guess that it's Tudor. :D

The other thing looks like the remains of a cheap fairground prize type seal. If it is something else I can't think what it might be. ::g
