Metal Detecting

I am going on holiday in September to St Ives in Cornwall , does anyone know if detecting is allowed on the beaches there , nothing is showing on the crown website , thank you for any advice .

There are no Crown Estate beaches in Cornwall although I do believe St Ives harbour is council owned and detecting is permitted.

All i can see is an area of deepest water in Newlyn harbour!

I have just had this useful reply from Cornwall council , which member might find helpfull , it lists the beaches that we can detect on .
Thank you for your email regarding metal detecting in Cornwall, I have provided some information below which should be of assistance.

Metal detecting is permitted on Council owned beaches as per the list below. Where a beach is leased out we advise that you seek permission from the beach leaseholder as well; which in most instances means they run the café on site so you could ask in there.

Metal detecting enthusiasts are asked to follow the Code of Practice for Responsible Metal Detecting in England & Wales, hold appropriate public liability insurance, report any significant finds to the Council & leave the beach as they found it (re-instating any holes that you dig etc).

Metal detecting is not permitted on beaches which have an SSSi (site of specific scientific interest) attached to them so if it is not on the list below it either has an SSSi or is a private beach. Where the Council only own between MHW (mean high water) – MLW (mean low water) then permission from the landowner above this point is also required.

Council owned beaches this activity is suitable on are:

· Wherrytown
· St Ives Harbour
· Porthmeor (leased out)
· Porthminster (leased out)
· Porthgwidden (leased out)
· Praa Sands (MHW – MLW)
· Gyllyngvase (leased out)
· Castle Beach (leased out)
· Swanpool (leased out)
· Porthtowan
· Portreath (only right hand side of watercourse is owned by CC)
· Widemouth (only North of Black Rock is permitted)
· Harlyn
· Treyarnon (MHW – MLW)
· Porthcothan (MHW – MLW)
· Mawgan Porth (MHW – MLW)
· Whipsiderry (but not on the cliffs)
· Porth (but not on Trevelgue Head)
· Tolcarne (MHW – MLW)
· Great Western (MHW – MLW)
· Towan (MHW – MLW)
· Little Fistral
· Fistral (MHW – MLW)
· Downderry
· Seaton
· Hannafore
· Readymoney
· Par
· Porthpean

That's a great piece of information, thanks a lot. I am going to Swanpool I saw it's a lease out beach. Am I good to go early in the morning or should I bribe the barman?
