Metal Detecting

Hi Folks,
Some of you may have read from my introduction that I decided to get a metal detector after reading my four year old little girl a bed time story about pirate treasure and she asked if we could find some.

So I had a day off work yesterday and waited for our new Ace 250 to arrive. I had already watched every video on YouTube so had an idea of how it worked and we put it together in seconds and off we went to the beach. (crown permit in hand)

In between beeps she had a fab time making sandcastles as she was in charge of the trowel while I did the swinging and she would come running over everytime I got a beep. Two ringpulls and a bit of lead later and we had a good signal. We spent ages trying to find it as the beach is sand and shingle and I'm not very good with the pinpoint feature yet. Then there it was. A shiney one pound coin.

Well I'm surprised half of Essex didn't hear her screams as she ran up and down the beach waving the coin in the air shouting "I've found treasure". Two families even came over to see what she had found.

To say it was one of those magical moments is an understatement. We went on to find another one before it was time to go home.

We did find it very hard to locate the items in the sand so as soon as we got back I ordered a Garrett Pro Pointer to hopefully speed things up.

We are now both hooked on our new hobby of "finding treasure"

great story, you have to love how children are so excited (so are we too!). I posted a similiar story a month back...out on the beach and my daughter was in charge of the pro-pointer. First signal, she puts in the pointer..moves the stones. "look daddy, a ring".

yep, silver wedding ring. Wouldn't give it to me either until I swapped it for some sweets.

She may be 4 but she's a wise one! <:-P

Great story.

My daughter (9) also wants to find treasure, she already collects coins. That helped me decide to buy one (this week), as I had been considering it for a while.

I have ordered a Garret pro pointer, which should help. Also whilst watching the videos on youtube, she said she wanted to hold the 'small detector'.

Looking forward to our first trip out and finding 'Treasure'.

My 4 year old loves the pro-pointer, she already knows that the higher the pitch the closer the find! and if she can locate a ring for me...then keep at it!

A brilliant post and wonderful story. I hope your little treasure finds lots of treasure for herself. Glad to she's started young!!

Kids are really thankful, if it comes to treasure hunting. (Unfortunately my daughter with 15 is now to old to be really interested - but she still likes the Euros and rings coming out from beaches.)

If I detect on the beaches in summer, usually children are coming up first, asking questions about what you are doing, follow you in masses. Or - swarming around, so that you cannot swing properly any more, trying to dig out your signals.
Sometimes they follow for such a distance, that it gets difficult to send them back to their parents, but if you feed them with a found rusty coin they usually do follow the instruction

My first beach detection this year (around 5 hours in Rostock on the Baltic Sea) resulted in 28 Euros and a slightly demolished thin silver ring.

If you are detecting dry sand a sand scoop is invaluable or even a plastic sieve

That was a nice story Emt, it took me back quite a few years to when my daughter was four. Now I've got a grandson who is nearly four, he likes to use my Garret Pro Pointer to detect the metal plate in his dad's leg, to everyones amusement.

What a lovely story... Of course, your daughter will now expect you to find some of that treasure you read in that book. So, don't disappoint her, nor us either, because we're all waiting with baited breath to see what this treasure is going to be. Good hunting, m8
