Hi, and welcome to the forum Graham.
As a newcomer, I would recommend a look at the
Basic Detecting Rules, and the
Forum Rules.
C-Scope detectors are excellent machines (I still have an old 1220B). I have moved your post to their dedicated forum
C-Scope Forum, and if you browse the content in there you will find some useful information.

Along with my CS6, my 1220xd is my other favourite detector for use around the farm and shares some of the pluses I like about the cs6. Simple, tough, no digital screens or menus to fiddle with, and like all my old CScopes, it seems to deliver the goods.I seem to have constant requests to look for lost items and the 1220 always delivers and is easy to pinpoint with being non-motion. Several folks lately have asked to borrow it for a few hours to find lost property and they have all found it very easy and pleasant to use.
It might not be the latest bells and whistles digital model but it is perfectly capable and in nearly 30 years has found more than any other of my machines including my phone-on-a-stick. I give it 10 out of 10 for enjoyment.

Hi Graham Pop
A warm welcome to our very friendly and knowledgeable MDF.
I have to agree with everything already mentioned...a great detector and more than capable of delivering the goodies.
It did back in the day and it will do now...there is plenty of time to consider a newer machine and the technology that comes with them once you have learnt the basics.
You never know...you might like your 1220 that much that you stick with it.
I wish you all the very best on your journey into the hobby with the 1220...please let us know how you get on
Regards.
