So I' am not really big on metal detecting on beaches but I' have recently moved from Margate which was a sandy beach to Deal so I am looking at Deal beach which is pebbles.. can I use a sandscoop on pebbles or is a spade preferred

Scoop preferred even on shingle and pebbles but spade can be used if you kneel and spread the material out with it as opposed to digging as such. I just use the scoop to do a wider hole if any real depth is needed

If they are large pebbles I would think a scoop would struggle, so I supose it size dependat.

Correct
They get to a size where hands and pin pointer is better than spade or scoop
Otherwise a target will just keep falling through the cracks
Large pebbles pointy spade

I just use my foot and pinpointer. The shingle isn't that deep and most targets are near the surface. The trough that runs along the beach has a lot of large stones that wouldn't be easy with spade or scoop.
