I know I am going to get it in the ear for this question [88/] but I have never used headphones on any detectors I have had, I have had the Nox 600 for a couple of years now, I detect in 5 tones with the horseshoe on, would I gain anything by using the standard wired headphones ?

I asked a similar question a while ago:

I've since bought some wireless ones for my Nox 600 and can’t now imagine not using them.

Cheers, Ruth

'Over-ear' headphones (as opposed to 'on-ear' headphones) should enable you to not only recognise different tones but also be aware of additional nuances in tones especially when non-ferrous targets become influenced by a build-up of contamination caused by heavy calcium deposits and to some degree surface build-up of verdigris.
Similar effects are produced when a non ferrous target lies in close proximity to ferrous contamination producing the mistermed expressions 'a false or 'iffy' signal'.
In short, headphones will allow the subtlety of some signals to be more readily defined, assuming of course, your natural hearing's much better than mine! Cheers Eric

Cuts out most of the background noise and the swishing over stubble etc.
It makes it a lot easier to hear them low faint signals. Each to their own but personally wouldn't be without them. [81/]

100% yes. After you have used them for a month or so, you will wonder how you ever managed without them.

Headphones:
- More considerate to others nearby;
- Better reproduction of nuanced tonal information - more/better finds;
- On-ear ones keep your ears warm in winter and extraneous/wind noise out.

Earplugs e.g. bluetooth or wired into WM08, give most of the above benefits but are less sweaty in summer.

I get a lot of dog walkers ect and if I hear someone coming tend to walk away so as not to be disturbed detecting, thats mainly why I dont use them, I have a new permission, 4 acres, that is completely private so will give them a go, thanks to everyone for the input. I put this on the Nox page as that is what I am using.

YES! without a doubt. I hated them at first but now can't imagine ever going without them, one of my first posts here actually mentions that I didn't like them but I was so wrong.
Someone here also mentioned that using 'phones prevents brain damage. True; a spade round the head for blasting out the speaker instead will do that [49/]

Wireless options are just so convenient and the benefits as discussed above are well worth it.

Yes !!!

- Headphones help you **hear faint signals** that you might miss with your naked ear . This can increase your chances of finding valuable or deep targets.

- Headphones help you **block out external noise** such as wind, waves, traffic, or people . This can improve your focus and concentration while detecting.

- Headphones help you **save battery life** of your metal detector by turning off the external speaker . This can extend your detecting time and reduce your expenses on batteries.

- Headphones help you **follow the ethics code** of metal detecting by not disturbing others with your beeping noise. This can make you more respectful and courteous to other people and the environment.

- Headphones help you **distinguish different tones** of different metals by providing clear and crisp audio response . This can help you identify whether a target is worth digging or not.

So a no-brainer mate :-)

Over-ear headphones provide much better protection from the above conditions in my experience [81/] Cheers Eric

I think that's what I meant!

The other thing I forgot to mention is that sometimes it's useful to be able to hear what's going on around you - dogs/teenagers approaching you on the beach or maybe skylarks in the field - so on-ear rather than over-ear might be better sometimes for that reason. [81/]
