Metal Detecting

Hello,
I'm from Denmark - sorry for my bad english

I normally detect for coins and relics on/in heavy soils. But now I have been on a couple of beachhunts (saltwater-beaches) with my detector....and it is very interesting. But It has only been on dry sand, because my coils are not waterproof. I own a X-terrra 705 with two coils ..... the 7,5 and the 18,75 kHz Double D 10" coils.............. I would like to buy the 7,5 or 18.75 KHZ MINELAB 9" ROUND X-TERRA CONCENTRIC COIL for beachhunting, because they are waterproof up till 1 meter. But I'm very much in doubt which one will be the best on wet saltwater sand......in the surf....and on shallow waters (I hope that you understand me )
Which concentric coil should I go for ??

I thought the X-Terra DD coils were waterproof? I used to use a 10.5" 7.5 khz DD on my X-Terra 70 in water often without any problems.....

washed mine in water to get the lumps of mud off an mine was fine

some are water proof others are water resistant this should explain it the x terras are towards the bottom of the page.

They are only waterresistant will not work in the surf or in shallow waters in salty conditions)

you know what, i had not looked at the 10" 7.5khz dd, as this is on my 705 as standard and i am sure its waterproof

will have to check in the attic for the box

ive heard the nel tornado 13x12 is good for beach hunting and waterproof can be brought on ebay for the x-terra 705 7.5khz but havnet got one myself just reading other posts

I used the 10.5" 7.5 khz DD on the beach, no problems with water and the DD coil in general is alot better than the concentric ones.

From the Minelab web site:

Water resistant: May be splashed, washed, used in drizzling rain, or moved through wet grass. Must not be submersed under water.
Water proof: Submersible to 1 meter. Ideal for shallow water wading and gold prospecting in shallow
streams.

Whether a submersible coil is necessary for wet beach searching depends on whether you intend to search in rock pools, I guess the answer is yes they are going to need searching and therefore it would need a water proof coil.

Why aren't all metal detectors as water proof as the Garrett AT-Pro and AT-Gold? Don't they get used outdoors in the rain... and search coils may be used under a few inches of water...

i sent a email to minelab today,
asking for info on the coils, it looks like there guide is accurate and i thought the 10"dd was waterproof so i am sticking with what the guide says, afterall they should know B-)
heres what the reply said:

There has been some confusion about coils and detectors historically on a general basis!
With that in mind, Minelab Marketing created a Coil Guide which I think you have referred to in your message
The rule of thumb with coils being waterproof or not generally depends on the filling: the insides: they are mostly ‘epoxy filled’, and these would be the [solid coils] as in the standard coil that comes with X-Terra: these would be waterproof.
The lighter [open] coils e.g. 10.5” – as used in the old Explorer design generally wouldn’t be waterproof.
As for the elliptical coils...these are usually [foam filled] and therefore not waterproof.
However, having said all that many people use many coil types without any water ingress issues. I have an early GP Extreme coil I’ve been using for over 7 years and I use it a lot in surf and streams...never failed!
