Metal Detecting

I can't say musket balls do not foe me anymore.
A decorated spindle whorl brings a slight smile.
And apart from a few tokens and a couple of seal matrices, csnt say in ever too impressed at th3 sight of lead.

And so it was too when I found this rolled up. As I threw it into my finds bag in the compartment that the rubbish goes I noticed lettering under the crud.
Managed to just about unfold without breaking it and as you can see...

I take it this is for a schoolkid to keep hold of and learn the alphabet?
But from what era and what's with the fancy floral design on the other side?

Post medieval(circa17th c) lead horn book.

Makes sense that this little 1p came up in the same area so i did suspect.
However as there is no U or J I was wondering if it naught even be as old as late Tudor.

That's interesting Another learning day! Any explanation as to why the u (or v) is missing, and why the y and z appear to be horizontally reversed?

Believe U and V were interchangeable until 18thC.
I often use a V instead of a U on txts, as in Roman lettering.

Thanks v uery mvch for the explanation That was hard to type

This particular horn book dates to Pre 1630
as J wasn’t added to our modern alphabet until then.
Truly a superb find.

I actually found one a couple of years ago myself.
Note that the Ampersand is included (bottom right).
