Spindle Whorl with a difference

Post by MetalSmithy »

Found this spindle whorl today on another stubble permission. Normally I wouldn’t contemplate posting it but this one is different.

I’m trying to figure out whether the design is either an elaborate random decoration or the shapes are meant to translate into something. Either way it seems like a lot of effort just for a bog standard spindle whorl.

It would also be good to know what period it falls into. Looks post medieval to me.

It has an "anglo saxon" look to it. Reminiscent of early medieval coinage.
Definetly worth posting though, not your average decoarared spindle whorl, thanks fir sharing.

That is an interesting one.
I've never seen one with those rings on the other side either.

Great feedback I must say! thanks everyone [81/]

For its size it’s heavy so I’m pretty sure it’s lead.

It does look a bit special, MS. As said above, I've never seen those concentric circles either. [42/]

That's got to be the best and most interesting Whorl I've seen.

As said...the circular lines are not something I have ever seen and I have found a fare few of these.

Well done on a very nice find [81/]

Regards.

Very unusual and intresting spindle whorl, the decoration definitely reminds me of a saxon coin. [81/] [81/]
