Metal Detecting

With the help of storm Bert there were plenty of fossils to be found where I live. Here’s a few I came across yesterday. Has the storm helped anyone else with fossil hunting or beach detecting?

Nice I’m hoping that next time I go detecting that storm Bert has washed out some nice flint tools from the plough soil.

Hi Christian, I’m in Kent on the south coast near Folkestone. I also find the odd sea urchin fossil while detecting.

It's ubelievable that they look so good and are so old.

And crazy to think these creatures were swimming around where I live millions of years before humans even existed!!!

They were on the earth for 140 Million years but become extinct 66 million years ago along with the dinosaurs when that rather large asteroid hit the earth so your finds are at least 66 Million + years old.
all very fascinating stuff

A few years ago I spent a very pleasant summer down there showing families how to find fossils while I hoovered up the gold. There are some clay beds exposed at low tide towards the camping site which throw up nice condition pearly ones.

That’s the exact spot I go to and where these were found. They were all pearly too but unless they are varnished/sealed the shiny layer flakes off over time. If I don’t varnish then I soak them in vinegar to remove the calcium and am left with shiny pyrite fossils. Here’s both results

Cracking fossils those
I was out on an arable field today and storm Bert had washed out some flint scrapers . Picked up 5 , not prehistoric man’s finest work but scrapers all the same!
