Mystery Roman object

Post by Charliecoops »

Found this yesterday in a field with lots of Roman history. Also found a Roman coin and a fibula brooch but not sure what this is? It’s bronze and seems like it could be Roman. Any ideas would be welcome! Thank you.

I’m sure I’ve seen something similar identified as a vine peg/spike. Something like that anyway. This does look old so I hope it is Roman. [81/]

Yes, it's what's called a vine eye.
It usually has wire passed through it, and is used for training climbing plants up walls.
I can't give you an age but it may not be that old, as I've seen the same article still in use today.
Are there any large houses with walled gardens nearby?

The PAN (Portable Antiquities of the Netherlands) identifies these objects as pipe cleaners.
This is another possible identification [42/]
