Metal Detecting

Paid a visit to the British Museum today, took a few pictures of the hoard, they look like they were made yesterday ! As you go in the main entrance turn right through a room with a shop display, then in the next room its in the first display case on the left, I asked at the information desk and they didnt have a clue where it was even after looking on their computer ! not sure how long it will be on display, I believe its going on to other museums next year.

What every detectorist dreams of and is at the top of their bucket list.

Thanks for posting...what an incentive to get back out on the permissions

Must keep an eye on where it goes next.

Was this hoard found at random as in did they just decide to detect that site or did the finder/s have some knowledge that something may be in that location ??

"From 26 November 2024 coins from the hoard will go on display at the British Museum.

They will later be displayed at museums across the UK, including in Bath, before finding a permanent home at The Museum of Somerset.

The first opportunity to see the hoard in the South West will be at the Museum of Somerset, Taunton in summer 2026."

"The hoard was discovered on 26 January 2019 by seven finders while metal detecting with the permission of the landowner in the Chew Valley area of Bath and North East Somerset. The coins were found without a container and had been scattered by the plough.  The find was reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme and deposited by the finders with the British Museum."


Here is a BBC article about the find. It names two of the finders, and elsewhere on the web I have seen that these two people were training five friends to use their metal detectors:

An inspiring find without doubt and a reminder yet again that we just NEVER know what will appear under our coil. Ancient battles, buried hoards and vanished buildings may leave no trace whatever on the landscape we trudge over. Thanks for sharing, its ages since I was at the BM a very impressive place and best to devote enough time to properly wander around.
