First time out to the beach

My local beach had some sand moved this week so I thought it was about time I had a go at beach detecting. Put the R1 into coin beach and off I went. Found nothing but foil for hours then had a 2p!
Got down to the area cleared by the diggers and found a half crown and a sixpence, also a halfpenny.
I was pleased with that for my first time on the beach!
Funny thing was, the gunk covering the coin came off easy when I dug the coin out, bit of spit and it just rubbed off to a red colour paste. When I get home the same gunk is rock hard and I can't shift it!
I suppose it has oxidized?
I like the beach, I am knackered after a non stop four and a half hour session though, you get so excited you lose track of time!!
