Okay so I know I amy be trying to run before I can walk but I am getting pretty down with my lack of finds when using my Deus. I have been on both pastured and ploughed and have found every piece of junk there is, horseshoes, shotgun cartridges, fishing weights, plough ends, wire, ring pulls, cans etc etc. My best find to date is a 1976 1p, woooooh! I would say ive only done around 12 hours detecting so far. Im using Goldmaxx Power settings and Deus Fast on heavily contaminated ground. Am I expecting too much too soon or do you think the sites I may have been on are a bit useless? I see all the amazing things people are pulling up here on thier first few outings and its making me worry Im doing something seriously wrong. Rant over

Hmmm, 12 hours......I'm afraid thats not enough time to get disheartened.
I have been doing some fields for years and not found fantastic things, other fields i have just walked on and found something nice....
12hours = 2 sessions...you have a way to go and some patience to aquire young jedi....

Heavily contaminated ground will need experience to hear the finds.....not all good finds will shout "dig me now" when you go over them.....
As for people finding good stuff on their first trips are actualy quite rare...
I did a post once where i found a saxon sceat...i also included the hundreds of items of junk that i also dug up...
Its the nature of the hobby and the thrill of the chase....

I thought that was probably the case, patience is a virtue and I will endeavour to obtain it!

Shotgun cartridges, fishing weights, wire, ring pulls are par for the course. You can't disc' them out, they come in the good target range.
Horseshoes, and plough ends, you wont dig after a while. You have to learn what the Deus is telling you.Stick with it!It will repay you in spades.

keep going ,once you remove all the rubbish on the plough soil the good finds normally start turning up.So go back over it again the land you have already detected especially when it gets ploughed again until its totally void of any signals.i had a plouged field once the firsy year was producing modern rubbish ring pulsl foil coke cans etc, the odd george v and victorian coin. The following year detected the same area a roman sesertius turn up i thought there is a chance of more roman.
Over the preceding years found more roman sertiuses and bronzes a silver siliqua, a gold quater noble a few hammered including a commonwealth a roman bronze knife a few saxon brooches pilgrims ampullae and theres still more, but it was a quick turn around this season didnt get much time to detect it. So there should be some good finds to be had on all farms with patience and a slow and low approach.

It would be the same with any machine Greg.It still has to be learnt!!!!Where the OP has an advantage is once learnt,it will be a long time before he needs to upgrade.

Would you ever consider a site as useless? Reason I ask is I have permissions on a small bit of pasture thats soon to be built on, Its riddled with tree roots and is a nightmare to dig on, at the end of it is a huge yard and there seems to be a lot of stuff dumped at that end of the field. Last time I was on it I was there for about 3 hours, I pulled up a lot of wire, tin cans, nails and bits of iron. Worth having another go on? Its only about an acre.

I'm just out the blocks too, and was finding it hard going. Then on Friday I found a 300 year old silver coin (yes I scratched it). Keep going mate, it's worth it when it happens. I found the silver, then nothing for two hours. It's that sort of hobby.
