Dave, as an ex-RE and bomb disposal, you shouldn't really be picking those things up. Anything that isn't a bullet size, leave well alone.

I dont know the rules for detecting in France and what do do with UXBs, but for any new detectorists in the UK looking at this thread this is what the NCMD code of conduct says about it:

If you discover any live ammunition or any lethal object such as an unexploded bomb or mine, do not disturb it. Mark the site carefully and report the find to the local police and landowner.

I would hate for anyone to get their machines damaged when you hit it with the spade

Bloody risky Dave..... but I admire your guts, I'd rather not see a photo of them though if you don't mind.

You do hear of detectorists being killed on old battlefields, perhaps we should consider a roll of honour? It could act as a reminder of the potential dangers involved in this hobby.

Hi Guys
Recently my grandson found an unexploded bomb apparently about a 2kg which wasn't very deep.Only when uncovering fully did he realise what it might be. This site has been detected on for over 30 years (and not found before? Detecting in discrim mode?) never ploughed, a cattle pasture with lots of dips and hollows, even an air-raid shelter now covered over. You can imagine conversation with local plod by a twenty year old. Plod eventually came and viewed from a distance, bomb squad arrived pretty quick and detonated it. But, I asked my grandson where were the photo's? he replied too excited and forgot. At least he didn't forget what we told him, DO NOT PICK IT UP!
We have found a few grenades, and other bits over the years, flag it and let the experts deal with it. Most explosives deteriorate over time and become VERY unstable, and time fuses etc forget what TIME means becoming instantaneous and totally indiscriminate......whoops. Please remember, not all munitions are explosive, phosphorous is extremely difficult to put out once started!

I am sorry if this seems totaly out of caracter for me but I must protest at this thread. I not only find it iresponssible to have a pic of a reckless (not couragess) guy holding an explosive like that but also I find it deeply offensive in the times we are living in. Every week the Prime Minister reads out condolences to the families of those Brave metal detectorists killed by explosives in AFGANISTAN.

Rant over sory if I offend anyone, do not want to be contoversial or start an argument and will not respond further.

It's amazing how many unexploded devises all over the world. I read there is countless explosive devises in our oceans. Apparently there was an unexploded devise that sunk the South Korea army ship about two months ago.

Check out the wreck Richard Montgomery, at Sheerness. If/when that goes off, it will be like a small nuclear bomb exploding.

My sons on his way to Afghanistan in April and the picture doesn't offend me or him, but he knows better than to pick one up, one of his sargents who should have known better tried to take a failed display round to pieces the other day, he's just back out of hospital after it went off on him
