hi all
as the title says, almost got blown away at the gunnery range yesterday, but it was worth it in the long run ,had up 6 1/2 20mm cases, and something a bit unusual but special, a 1943 2 pounder pom pom case, very good condition, see pics.

Image

2 pounder comparison with 20 mm case.(and 50p)

wondered if anyone could hazard a guess as to why they were there, as we thought it was only an aerial training range
this is only the fifth one of these to come up to our knowledge, but the beach keeps throwing up unusual stuff , so who knows, maybe there's more to come ...........?

regards...........Ian

Nice finds :) Lovely 2lber case. And just in case you weren't aware, the 'N' denotes naval use :) :)

Keep up the good work :)

hi all

thanks for replies, and thanks Steve, wasn't aware of the significance of the "N",but we had heard rumours that they had boats anchored just offshore, possibly involved with the training aspect,or maybe using the guns in anger against the Hun flying up river (or back down ). can only assume these 2 pounders had been kicked or rolled off the decks of these vessels and into the water.
We'll keep looking- there must be more down there !

another thing about the 2 pounder case, I know that the S gun used on hawker hurricanes fired cases stamped with the N I know this because of some research I did a while ago and today I found proof of S guns being used on an air to ground gunnery range I dug today I found one of the projectiles for the gun their much longer than the standard 2 pounder and hollow from the back to the front . I also used to own a whole 2 pounder S gun round still crimped into the case and the case it was crimped into was stamped with an N and the projectile was hollow . so maybe Ian you've found something fired by a hurricane
