Metal Detecting

On the news this morning - thats why I never bash largish metal items that I've found under the sand - you just never know!

Hi evee2000 and indeed all detectorists -

Talking about bombs - one place I used my detector was on the beach at Frome (nr Liverpool) - found nothing exciting.

Within a couple of months of my visit there was news of a metal-detectorist who had died after attempting to dig-up some ordnance not realising that this was a live bomb or shell.

Beware Frome because the beaches were used during both world wars for the embarkation of troops and their supplies which of course included explosives.

Some of the cargo was mislaid in the confusion and remains unaccounted for to this day, I believe.

Theres always going to be explosives turn up on the East Yorkshire coast, Only a couple days ago a bomb was dug up at Flamborough, and several Grenades have turned up near Filey, Mappleton beach was closed last year due to 100's falling out of the cliffs, Just the legacy of to World wars

I thought Frome was in Somerset not near Liverpool where I live , sure you have the right place? CH.

Just wondered how the troops would have disembarked at Formby unless they used landing craft ,water is shallow even at high tide unless there were jetties there years ago but don't remember any.Formby is a no go for metal detecting now as its a nature reserve .

Thanks for that info Craghopper - unlikely that I would wish to return.
