Metal Detecting

I drove over to my local beach late Sunday and noticed thatv there was hardly anyone there probably due in part to the change of weather and also the fact that the new school term has started.Had a word with my friend the mobile shop owner who told me that trade has fallen away so I`ll probably stop going to the beach unless there are favourable strong winds to stir things up.He also said that the yacht `EMANT` (that I mentioned in a previous topic) had been sailing from Mersey Island running aground on the granite rocks of one of the new breakwaters.She was deemed a total loss and broken up for scrap.
I started detecting near the beach entrance and found a sixpence (1957) and a few very corroded decimals after which I moved over to the eastern side where the remaining coins (all relatively recent losses) were found.Near the high tide mark there was a large area of shingle in which I was quite surprised to find two £1 coins and a 50p (in separate holes) around 10" deep.

I think the wintertime for me is the best time to do my beachdetecting.

Things can change overnight. I watch a Youtube channel from a guy in the US who goes to the beach with his detector every day. He must have been over the same spots hundreds of times, but he still manages to find things on the same spots.

Completely agree with you opa,studying your local beach certainly puts the odds in your favour and of course the winter weather often produces older coins

Definitely winter for me.not only more chance of the sand stripping of the beach,!But no problem parking,Free too.(october to May.)Never failed to find "something",even if its just pays for my fish n chips.haha

As we dont have a club dig this coming sunday and the weather is going to be fine,i may take the Pulse down the coast for the day and give it my 1st full days beach detecting,i have a scoop so basically that is all i need.

Odds on favourite it could be Clacton,although its a dump it must of had some vistors through out the long hot summer,so the pier area look like 1st port of call

If nothing else it will be a good day out

Quite right about Clacton mega - it is a rather depressing dump and I for one wouldn`t want to live there.On the detecting front if the tide is out you might find some coins under the pier,the dry sand opposite the cafe close to the pier has produced coins for me - there isn`t too much rubbish there.If you have time you might find something on Martello beach by the Martello tower beyond the Inn heading away from the pier down Marine Parade West towards Jaywick.The sand there is from the fairly recent dredging of Harwich harbour and there is a possibility of finding something old though there are plenty of bottle tops!! I wouldn`t expect any old coins by the pier though.HH

Thanks for the advice,anything up towards Holland on Sea and the Gunfleet club ???

Haven`t been to Holland -on -Sea for sometime,the holidaymakers all tend to sit on the Jaywick side of the pier as that is very sandy.The wall at Holland is in bad condition and the council have put through plans (accepted) to have it repaired.Might be worth keeping an eye on developments there.Some time ago I found some old coins near the sailing club but haven`t been there for a number of years.I found a number of old coins there back when they were making new breakwaters with the large Norwegian granite rocks.At that time (1993) they lowered the sand level before setting the rocks.If I find them,I`ll post some pictures here of what it was like at that time.

@Expat Aussie,will give the Jaywick side a go with the Pulse if its clear and then maybe drift up towards the sailing club,use to have 4 boats stored in the Gunfleet compound for many years,the sea view has been spoilt with those off shore wind turbines,they look bloody awfull

I have alot of knowledge of the area as the wife lived at Holland for many years

It`s been raining here so no chance of going out,I`ve hunted out some of the photos I took at Holland-on-Sea when the environment agency were installing new breakwaters from imported Norwegian granite.
