Metal Detecting

Had a run up to Scarborough today, More sand than the Gobi desert. Came away with £2.12 and a modern silver ring but it was hard going. I was chatting to one of the stall holders over a coffee and he told me they have taken about 7 foot off the beach and put some new sand on.
The main mission for me was to get out for the day and try out my new ( birthday ) sandscoop from Muck the digger. What a great bit of kit. at one point I was down two feet and still no sign of the base layer. The scoop took it in its stride.
Lovely scenery, Nice full English breakfast from the harbour and the rain stayed away.

thanks for that Ricky, I knew Scarborough would be a long shot to be honest but I hadn't been there for ages and fancied a day there.
It was a pleasure to see how much deeper you can get with a scoop. The ring was from wet sand and I doubt I would have recovered it with my spade.
Scoop now rinsed and treated to a rub down with wd40!

I don't like Scarborough beach much for detecting, I just don't have a good feeling about it... could be all the trash that exists there.
Funnily enough, I was there a few weeks back when the were moving the sand. Once they had finished dumping it further up near the spa, I got on there with the MD hoping to find lots of stuff. Sadly, the only stuff I found was modern 1p and 2ps. I never got chance to do the second pile or the area from where they removed the sand because the tide came in.

Every time I see detectorists on scarbados beach they say oh yeah I found this Victorian ring last week, or I found this and that... so much so I don't believe them anymore. Scarborough gets hammered regularly by the locals. They come down for an hour here and there everyday I reckon. Not saying good finds aren't there, but when I went over it a lot with my previous PI, all I ever found was junk, junk and more junk.... in fact, the sort of junk no one wants to find at all, the sort of junk even scrapyards won't take.

So for now, I've given up on it. I'll likely go back in winter when all the summer boys run indoors :-)

lol....you tell that to my mate kev(hukfin)
seen him pull seven rings in one sitting
not done too bad on there myself.
paid for my machine three fold in one year.
found a diamond engagement ring on there a few months ago just with my pro pointer
there was that much comming off me and kev switched the machines off and just dug with our hands!

ps/your walking three foot high above the hard pack now with all the sand.
soon as them storms come and the rocks pop out were on it like a bonnet.

Someone said that when the old wood wreck below the RNLI appears, the time is good to detect as the sand is low... is that correct?

we had it pretty good last year.
theres a big pipe that shows when the sands off and a load of rocks that show just below it.
i was over there last week and it looks pretty dismal on the sand front.
filey was on fire last year.

spoke to kev last week, said youve been doing the earlys
wish i could get a break from work and id be on there with ya.
weve been flat out lately but im taking two weeks off at end of june for a bit of RnR
