I think the US Army did some training there during the war, another detectorist found a dogtag on the beach a few years back!

WSM and candlestone across the channel ( bristol) in wales were beaches used for live firing practice for D- Day by both british, commonwealth, and american troops, so you should find some nice mid war bits and bobs. the hollow .50 cal "warheads" were most likely tracer rounds,,
my mate holidayed there 4-5 years ago and found atleast a dozen just walking along the waters edge.
as already mentioned, just be carefull with any ordanence.
an old addage from my army days.... " if you dont know what it is, dont know what it does, and dont know its for.. dont touch it".

My Dad was in that area in WW2 and tells me he regularly fired the Bofors guns.
Watchet was a place he mentions they fired regularly.
