Hello again,this is the second time I've put out a request for any metal detectorist living in or around the PEMBROKE area of WEST WALES.
I have permissions,and obviously the beaches are close by.
I'm a retired guy with plenty of time,so week day hunts are not a problem.
I've got my own transport.so,give it some thought.
It would be great to have a bit a company and a good old natter..!!
Thanks for looking....and..Good hunting.. ::g

Yep you'd think it was easy finding a digging mate, especially when you have land to dig on. Doesn't work out that way in real life.

Over the last 4 years or so I have had about 6 'new buddies'. Life and or jobs seems to get in the way. All have disappeared.

Our hobby has quite a large turnover of people, as seen through this very forum. Just the way it is.

Just as an afterthought........................is the hobby as popular as it was a few years ago ?

In my opinion no. But that might be just a local Lancashire/Yorkshire area thing.

Hello 'stargazer' - You could well be right but it seems to me that there's been near record 'New' members joining this forum over the last 12 months. That said, I very much doubt if our hobby will ever achieve the numbers that Coarse Fishing attracts, though that's a good thing in my mind! :D

THANKYOU to those who have contributed to my request for a detecting buddy.
I agree that Metal detecting will probably never get as much membership as fishing.and i do wonder metal detecting is a bit on the demise,firstly a lot of the problem is that a heck of a lot of farm land(farms) are being bought up by county council's...who the majority (not all) forbid metal detecting on their new acquisition's of land !!!
Also,very recently the price of metal detectors has increased dramatically,aparently due to the monetary situation(BREXIT) !!!...I was considering the purchase of a new MACRO RACER 2...but it's gone up by over £100:00..!!!!..well I can't justify that,and I think that a lot of persons considering the take up of metal detecting as a hobby.
So for me I will wait until a mk 2 MACRO RACER comes on the market and then I will reconsider an upgrade .
Thanks for reading,and I await your comments........In the meantime..... Good hunting.. ::g

Hello Macroman' - Regarding your comments about the Makr Racer 2, I wondered why it was that you were considering 'up-grading' from the Racer 1 to the racer 2. This is purely my
take on the proposal and of course your decision is to be respected.

I have had the Makro Racer 1 for over two years now and apart from the coil and bolts (due to the well known sensitivity concerns at settings over 69) being replaced by Makro (entirely free of charge and post paid) :D I have otherwise, experienced no problems with it at all. ::g

It's true to say that the Racer 2 has some additional features eg. Save Changes, Deep' and 'Notch'! are three such examples but there are others. 'Save changes' is certainly a welcome addition, similarly 'Deep' appears to be a proven asset when on pasture but the other added features aren't immediately obvious essential requirements especially so the 'Notch' for us in uk. There is also the matter of the on-screen information appearing quite a bit smaller than is the case on the Racer 1 which means donning the old 'spectaculars' for those like myself who are over 21!

In short, (yes why didn't I say this in the first place)? the extra cost involved when taking into consideration the loss made on the resale of the Racer 1 is very likely to be viewed as a possible deciding factor. So there's no need for your decision to be seen as 'unfortunate' in my book!
All the best and whatever choice you make, it's your's so enjoy. Regards ss47

Hi ss47,Thanks for your welcome comments,i to had a GREAT free replacement of the now notorious coil lug breakage saga.....
What I would like to know is the problem of over 80 discrimination problem,sorry I can't recall your actual discription ...an age thing !!!
If there's something that I need to do to get my detector upgraded /corrected whatever,i would be very grateful indeed.
Many thanks once again...... ::g

Hello 'Macroman' ::g The original problem that Racer 1 users had to deal with was that the sensitivity control could not be increased above a setting of '69' without the detector indicating an 'overload' audio signal (like a siren). If as you say, you have had a replacement coil due to 'lug breakage' you will have the fully redesigned coil which is free from that trouble - so no worries. :D
All the best - Regards ss47

Many thanks ss47 for your very quick response to my question.....phew !!...I can now detect with the knowledge that the "RACER" is 100% and it's the operator who needs to wise up.!!... LOL
Also,gotta say that after reading your piece about a possible upgrade to a RACER 2,i will be staying with the Machine that I've got.And as I said before,especially with the huge increase on price.!!
Many thanks once again,ps,what is your best RACER find to date ?
Good hunting.... ::g

There is a simple answer to the question "is the hobby as popular as it was a few years ago ?"
How many people have insurance (NCMD+FID) ... but I guess the numbers aren't published ... so I guess we will just have to keep guessing!! ::g ::g ::g <:-P

There is a tidal wave of price increases coming down the line ... so far we have just seen the tip of the iceberg

Lots of folk buy the insurance but aren`t "active" and, as has been eluded to already, the turnover is high.
The hobby has also seen a flurry of "pay to dig" cash groups on social media that do it no favours at all and they will lead to some form of regulation, they also give the perception that the hobby is "busy".....but there aren`t enough folk willing to pay to go around as a number have already found out.

As you were......keep on keeping on!

In 2015 my detecting was halted for 7 months due to a back injury followed by a house move just completed so there really hasn't been the chance to be 'out there' detecting. I'm hoping that once I get settled-in here in North Lincolnshire (Brigg), hopefully I'll be in a better position to knock on some farm doors to renew the quest for some land! ::g Regards ss47
