If you did`nt detect would you want your 9 acres detected ?
Hi All, A mate of mine recently bought a house with 9 acres. Mad size garden, field and woodlands. Said to him I would go over it for him and show him all the bits I find, happy to give it a few days. Did`nt sound keen when I metioned it to him, funny if the situation was turned around and he was the detectorist I would of brought him on 100%. I would love to know what is there. I caught him when he just moved in probably not the best time. Still I`m not asking twice. If I do it I will report back. Good luck, happy hunting and New year........ ![ThumbsUp [81/]](./images/smilies/81_EmoticonsHDcom.png)

You never know, he might change his mind. I don't think there's any harm in asking again at some point in future when he's settled in properly. Good luck with it, 9 acres is nothing to sniff at!

Depends how good a 'mate' he is..... it's understandable that having just bought a property that he's quite protective of it, but as Etruscan_Toad says, once he's settled in and realised that he might have some history that you can help to reveal, it might be a different matter...

Hi Phil, We go back a long way and I would trust him with anything I have, feel the feeling is mutual. Whatever he buys he redevelops, no love affair for him just likes a profit and good luck to him.......

I'd be wary if someone wanted something from me but phrased it as if he was doing me a favour. It's like saying "I'll catch all those fish in your pond, I'll generously give up my time to come fishing, and I'll even let you see them before I take them away." To most non-detectorists, it is just a hobby. Also, If the landowner regularly buys and sells property, he might be wary in case you find something important which interferes with his plans.
In my non-detecting years, I wouldn't let anyone detect here because I love the history of the place and the thought of objects being taken away out of context filled me with terror.

We are not on the same page Fred. I`m not "someone" we are old mates. I want nothing out of it but happy to give a few days of my time for no financial return.....If I find a few bits they are all for him......

In that case maybe it's just the worry of most property developers - if you were to find something special it might involve bringing in archaeologists and delaying development plans?KevinB wrote: Sun Jan 05, 2025 8:56 pm Hi Phil, We go back a long way and I would trust him with anything I have, feel the feeling is mutual. Good decision not to ask twice ... though you could offer to give him an MD lesson ... and you never know he might ask you back in your pwn right ..KevinB wrote: Sun Jan 05, 2025 7:33 pm Hi All, A mate of mine recently bought a house with 9 acres. I think it can sometimes be even harder if you are old mates. I have mates I have known for nearly 60 years and it can be really tricky if they ask if they can do a bit of fishing or put their old car in my shed. They don't always understand the family politics involved or that I wouldn't ask to come round to their house to carry on a hobby as I assume they want their own privacy and space in their spare time. 9 acres isn't a lot, it's the same size as my good lady's horse paddocks, but we are always out there doing stuff and enjoying our time together at weekends.KevinB wrote: Sun Jan 05, 2025 10:54 pm![]()

If he developes proprties the last thing he wants is for someone to discover something historical that might hold up his futre plans. ![ThumbsUp [81/]](./images/smilies/81_EmoticonsHDcom.png)

Old wooden built bungalow looks so sad but a wicked plot.
Is the south coast beach ring pull kid going to come out of there with both guns blazing???
I think not......
