Charles the bold double patard..

Post by Ollie K »

Hi there, Well today I was in one of those 'I don't want to do anything but I don't want to sit still either kind of moods', so I did the obvious thing and grabbed my van keys and detector bag and sought the remedy of our good ol' clean, dungy Norfolk air! I went back onto the field that has yielded a fair bit of good, interesting finds over the last 4 years or so. It didn't take me long to try a piece of rough ground, some half an acre in size, beyond the main stubble field. Now usually I run my Deus on 18khz, full tones, but today it was making a right old racket and frankly, I wasn't in the mood so I dropped the frequency to 12, upped the discrimination to 5, reactivity to 3 and went about things. After a few bullet cases and a decorative 3" flat piece of lead, a scratchy target rang out in my chef phones. The initial plug yielded nothing so I dug out a bit more.. Still nothing so out came the probe.. Beep beep beeeeeeeep... 'Ar, there she be.. '
I could see something coin like in a lump of damp soil so I pulled it from it's grave andhad a closer look.. 'Thats a bit different me thinks..' I could make out a shield but the other side looked positively Jeton like. 'Maybe a silver Jeton??' Whatever it was I was pleased as punch with it.
I resisted the urge to rub it so instead I waited until I got back to the van, whereby I could give it a wash in some water. Pleased with the level of detail I decided to investigate as to what it could be and a similar looking example I saw was a Dutch 'Karel de Stoute (Charles The Bold)'
'CHARLES THE BOLD' love that! :)

Can anyone confirm this and/or shed any more light on it please? Why would a dutch coin be in Norfolk? Incidentally I have found lots of Charles I coins and a couple of Mary Groats in this area and it's near to an old disused railway line. I believe an ancient pathway might have ran down to the stream here, as I have found a pilgrim's Ampulla, various hammered coinage, and mounts, etc..

Thanks for reading and let me know what you reckon- Cheers!

Edward 4th did a deal with Philip the Bold and these double patards were made legal tender in England. They had the value of a groat. So in effect it's not truly a foreign coin! You can google more info.
You may find it under Burgundian coinage in England. ::g

That's great guys, thanks for your replies. That would make sense being found near the Mary Groats, I've found coinage from the 1100's right through so every signals got promise (mind you so does every other signal anywhere!) I'll check that out spearhead ::g

It's a coin I've never managed to find but it's an attractive design I'll be hoping to come across.
It's a shame about the the stress fracture :( of that example. Regards ss47

Yes it's been beaten up by the plough a bit! :-L When I first saw it I thought it was a silver jeton.

Thanks Fred, I'm unsure as to how unusual these are as there are a few on the finds.org website but I can't see many others, apart from on the Colchester treasure hunting site. I'd certainly not seen one before.
