Imgur, image posting guide

Post by Steve_T »

A handy image posting guide for Imgur, for Windows OS (it may work on other systems)
And works OK with most Internet Browsers like Chrome.

It will work on iPad with Safari, although the guide below may not be correct for that.
Also there is an App (Apple & Android) For iPad only works from iOS 10.0 and later

Those of you wanting to use a hosting site for images could try Imgur, its very straight forward and great for hosting photos ideal for posting on forums, as you know only 4 attachments per day is permitted but with Imgur you can add as many images as you like, size has to be as per rules of the forum this guide is for MDF specifically.

Ideally you will have taken some well-focused bright clear set of photos with a scale, a ruler or graph paper is best as coins can be mistaken, you’ve spent hundreds on a detector a couple of £’s is not a lot for a measure.

3 or more images from different angles (Front, Back, Side) so it can be identified by people, take lots and choose the best ones, coins 2 images so both sides can be seen. Have a go at cropping to reduce the image size, and resize the picture in Windows Paint viewtopic.php?f=42&t=88324
also how to save photos where you can find them, fear not you can resize with Imgur too.

The picture, I deliberately took a bad photo, it was taken with poor lighting and from 10 inches away, and when you see the end result it’s not bad. With more care and effort you can get a much better image by having it in a good light, and from closer with better focus

This guide is picture heavy, it’s a step by step guide for those who are not very good at doing picture editing, some will know already how to do this, this is a belts and braces guide that anyone with less ability than others can improve on their skills.

When you have opened and signed into Imgur you will see a page with your images, if you want to post an image follow this guide, hopefully you will have resized to the allowable limits, if not they won’t post into MDF forum. (See next paragraph)

Don’t worry you can resize in Imgur too, hover over the picture and you will see a box with a pen and bin, click on the pen this will then allow you to edit the picture, in the picture preview in top right there is a box, reduce the highest number to the allowable size for pictures posted to the MDF forum, then save. I will show you later with a guide

There are other ways to get the BBCode from Albums, when you get used to the program you will find all sorts of useful things and different ways to do things.

Here we go……………….

When signed in you should see something like this, like it says click on Add Images
Image

Then you get a page like this, Click on Browse
Image

Navigate to your Picture Folders and choose the folder (Imgur Example Folder) and click on the folder
Image

Then when it’s selected, copy the images by holding down the Ctrl key on the keyboard and left click each picture (or one by just left clicking) then click on Open
Image

When the pictures have uploaded to Imgur you should see this with your images in
Image

Let’s choose an image to edit into a usable picture, hover over the picture to see the pen, click on it
Image

Then this Edit box shows, click on it
Image

Here’s the picture ready for editing, click on advanced
Image

This opens the Editing part, lets lighten it first, it’s a bit dark
Image

It’s a simple slider bar, when clicking Apply you can lighten more if you need to
Image

Much better, now select Crop by clicking on it
Image

Here is how you Crop the image to the desired size
Image

When you have it the size desired Click on Apply
Image

Then click on Save
Image

Now you are back to the Images, hover over the image and select the Pen for editing again
Image

See the box top right; select the HIGHEST number, highlight then delete and type 599
The size is too small so it’s OK to size UP to 599
(If the number is higher in either one choose the highest number and change to 599)
Then click on Enter on the keyboard.
Image

Now you have a decent sized image, lightened and sized for posting
Like this, then click Save
Image

You are now back at the Images, hover over the image (not on Pen or Bin) and left click on the image
Image

Almost there now, this box comes up, we need the BBCode, click on Copy
BBCode for Forums and Message Boards & Linked BBCode for Message boards work
There are other ways to copy the code from albums (not covered here)
Image

Open the MDF Forum, navigate to Finds ID and click on New Topic, put something in the Subject, then type your info into it and where you want the image to be Right click and select paste, it should look a little like this, then click on Preview
Image

You should then see something like this, check it’s as you want it, edit the post type some more info and when you’re happy click on Submit (the reason for preview is to make sure the image is there)
Image

That should be on the forum as the preview shows, you can always when adding an image to a new post go back and choose another image, copy the BBCode and paste another image, as many as you like.

The Image can easily be ID’d as it’s so much better than the original, remember what I said at the beginning “The picture, I deliberately took a bad photo”

If you did not resize and edit this is what it would look like, not good! Not much of a chance for an ID
Image

If i have left anything out please point it out and i will edit the post

I also have a guide for signing up to Imgur if that is needed

Regards Steve

Fantastic guide Steve, well done matey

Question
I opened an imgur account yesterday and it took me about 4 mins to load a photo up and get it on the forums, so it is easy
But
What is the difference between "BBcode" and "Linked BBcode"?
I used the linked BBcode and it seemed to work flawlessly, but your guide recommends using the BBcode

Either code works, but for less confusion for people I thought the "BBCode" was best as it says "Message Boards And Forums"

I can edit to include ::g

Just tried it on my iPad, works OK from Safari bookmark, and works OK for posting, there is an App, it will only work on iOS 10.0. or later on Apple

My iPad is one of the first ones and is ancient.

I will include this also in an edit, i will let it run for a couple of days and do it when its quiet

I have been busy today, this has been a good distraction, had some Work to do for work project deadline coming up and i am meant to be there tomorrow, may have to Skype in , needed to make sure it was ready.

The Guide didn't take to long to be honest once i got into the rhythm ::g

Done my accounts, sent pictures to relatives in Australia, renewed TV licence, cleaned snow off the car and drive, Uploaded some images and info to the PAS, sorted out my fathers carers, just my passport to renew now

I will be glad to get back to work for the rest
