Wonderful find indeed =D> =D> =D> ::g
l managed to get several names off the coins on the day. ie tetricus ..victorinus ..postumus ..claudius gothicus.. but from the first date to the last date there are about 30 or so, possible
names in the 25 year period so l'm hoping that there may be a rare one or two there!
its been a long 3 years and still not sure of anything. Hutch.

I agree with you that there may be a scarce Emperor or two in that many coins. Unless the local museum are interested you and the landowner will probably get them back minus the rare ones which the BM may claim.

Good luck.

"Family bank" is the best description.

Generation 1 starts the hoard by burying a pot at "the secret place".
Generation 2 adds to it, different emperor.
Generation 3.... and so on.

Either that or it is ritual but also multi-generational.

That is why the context/completeness is important, if it is lifted whole and then disassembled correctly more becomes known and can be linked to disruption across the Roman Empire.

It`s also why the system shouldn`t be allowed to "cherry pick" any rare coins. They should stay together for future generations who will learn/know more.

How far away were the 3 single coins from the main hoard site, out of interest?

I like to see a positive story about metal detecting. Yet again another metal detectorist in this case (hutch13138,) has made a great contribution to the historical record of the British Isles!

I read an article recently that suggests the vast majority of Treasure Trove finds are now from metal detectorists. Let’s face it, if it was not for our hobby, I reckon that most of these items would never be found!

I’d personally be ringing and emailing every week
There are 9,000 coins to clean & catalogue as evidence for the inquest, and the small matter of a pandemic as well.
If it was rushed people would complain its also a time-consuming job to do properly.

The minutes of the TVC are freely available to read and it may benefit some people to do so rather than the inevitable.

The single coins initially found were within about three metres , so not very far..
