1) Which Beach -Swansea bay

2) Which area - South Wales

3) Is metal detecting allowed - Yes

4) Is a Permit Required - No though its a good idea to drop the council a Email

Important additional Info- Other Gower beaches are controlled by Swansea council, Port Eynon/Horton, Caswel, Langland and Three Cliffs bay.

Swansea council now require you to contact them for permission. They require your full name, address and a copy of your liability insurance.

They then send a permission letter to detect in Swansea parks and beaches.

** They require you to have this permission letter on you while detecting in their area. **

Every year upon your liability insurance lapsing they will automatically contact you to renew the permission.

Exclusions - Brynmill Park

Oxwich Bay and any privately owned beach

Now I don't know all the beaches in Swansea as to which are privately owned, maybe someone can enlighten me. I did ask which beaches are allowed and the reply I got was "Not the privately owned ones like Oxwich" I didn't want to push her any further as I am delighted to have a parks detect in too! :;@

Thank you for your information, this is indeed news to me I've detected on the beaches above without anybody aproaching me since 2001. I will of course check, I know the parks require insurance and a letter but this has never included the beaches in the past, again thanks

I asked for permission to detect on Swansea beaches, I never mentioned parks, and that was what they came back with. Probably clamping down on people a bit.

Hi I've applied to Swansea Council for a permit to search the beach and the parks. Durring a few Email conversation about what I needed to apply for a permit the beaches were never mentioned only the parks. When the letter granting permission arrived the instructions only concerned parks, I guessing from those Emails there is no permission to search the beaches needed. [81/]

Thanks for this info! I read that there is a SSSI around Blackpill. Does anyone know exactly where this is? Is it just in the dunes or does it extend further down towards the sea?

I've had a quick look at the SSSI map and there doesn't appear to be any restrictions around Blackpill. Although the blackpill area is a favourite area for bird watchers.

I'm thrilled to share that I've just received my permission letter to metal detect in Swansea's parks and beaches, and it only took 40 minutes! Kudos to Swansea Council for their efficiency and support for metal detecting enthusiasts. This quick turnaround is much appreciated and allows us to explore and enjoy our hobby with proper authorization. Great job indeed!

All they need is your liability insurance and personal details/address.\

The 'park letter' also cover the beaches, as stated in email but not in the letter.

Hi all, I recently came to own a metal detector! We took it out for a spin on the beach by the university's Bay campus, and it kept picking up this weird charcoal-like substance... Is this something spat out by the steelworks across the bay, perhaps?

Anyway, an actual questions I have is: has anyone found anything better than discarded cans around Swansea / Gower? Any tips for a first-timer? TIA!
