I saw a post of someone who wants to make their own coil which made me wonder are coils interchangeable?
What stops them being used on other makes and models apart from the plug?
Could a coil from one machine have the plug changed to be able to work on another or do they contain chips which lock them to certain models?
Are all coils locked to certain models?

The simple answer is No for numerous reasons -
Plugs, Sockets, Wiring, frequencies, Mountings all of which differ. It would be a loss making commercial decision! The list goes on.........
Cheers Eric

I understand it as coils, and their cables, having been 'tuned' to the particular detector requirements. Even if you got past the different connector designs, lower shaft mountings, voltages etc, whilst you might get an 'alien' coil to work to some degree, it would not be at it's best. More likely, it would not work at all.
If there was a way to use coils on detectors for which the coil was not originally designed, I suspect third party manufacturers would have taken the opportunity and marketed it. But, to my knowledge, all the third-party manufacturers only produce coils for specific model ranges e.g. Coiltek coils for the Minelab Equinox detectors.
When some clever folks make their own coils (or perhaps modify other coils to work with their detector) I feel sure the resulting coil will only be compatible with one detector model/model range. The person making or modifying the coil will (on top of being an electronics boffin ...) almost certainly have had to use parts or principles that exist in the manufacturers own coils, in order to get their 'home-made' coil to function well.
All the above is my non-expert opinion.

I was just being clear that I am not an expert on the subject. But having picked up bits and pieces of the subject, from various sources, I have come to my own conclusions about the likelihood of why it happens this way!Grayling wrote: Sat Mar 18, 2023 1:21 pm That made me laugh ...... a lot.
