Dartmouth area beach detecting

Post by Mjb123 »

Hello,

Visiting Dartmouth, Devon in a few weeks, just wondering about detecting on any beaches in the area.

I had a read up, Blackpool Sands beach is a No Go, appreciate any knowledge of detecting beaches in the area.

Many thanks

Hi Mjb123

I can only point you in the direction of the Crown Estates web site...here you will find a map that as all the beaches available to detect on...these will be highlighted in purple.

Regards.

Thanks Makro 2

I checked the crown map - nice and purple, so perhaps good to detect on Blackpool Sands beach.

When I read up on Blackpool Sands beach with South Hams website - they clearly say No detecting on beach.

So - I’m unsure if allowed or not, though as been stated by local council, no detecting, I will pass that beach.

Not sure - the information value of Crown beach maps - [27/]

Thanks though, appreciated.

Blackpool Sands is a private beach. Oddly it's purple on the CE map.

Their website says;

'Metal Detectors are not permitted anywhere on the beach or any surrounding areas, the sole exception being our own search and recovery team.'

I've checked with the owners of Blackpool Sands ( with whom I have a weird connection - not for here!) and its a definite no.... They will be taking up the depiction on the Crown Estates mapping. Sadly it was an immovable stance. To be honest knowing the beach pretty well I think all you would have found is dropped modern coins and a few watches...

Just an update,

I managed to detect a few small coves between Dartmouth and Blackpool Sands at low tide.

Also spent a day on Slapton Sands, huge area of beach, steeped in history with the US army exercise and also a Dutch coal boat that got stranded for a few days in the 1930’s.

Found zilch though managed to clear a few fish hooks and bottle tops off the beach.

Defo worth it for the great landscape with the beach running between the sea and lagoon.
