Treasure process - how long between coroner and valuation?

Post by Worzel »

HI all
Three and a half years ago I was incredibly lucky to stumble across a sizeable hoard of medieval silver pennies, all from c1220-40. Mainly English, but with a handful of Irish and Scottish too.
Obviously, I reported them to the FLO straight away, and handed them over.
The identification/logging of the coins took from then until earlier this year, and last week I attended the treasure inquest, where it was indeed decided that they were treasure. The next stage is for them to be given a market value by the British museum bods, as a local museum has apparently said it would like to purchase them. So, my (probably unanswerable) question is: does anybody know, or have experience of, how long this next stage might take? Hopefully not another 3.5 years!
Many thanks in advance

It begs the question, what have they been doing for 3 and a half years? 1 year seems about 6 months too long!
I have no experience of this though, having never found any treasure!

Hi Worzel
A long time ago, actually 25 years ago I found a gold medieval Clergyman's ring down in Cambs and the whole process from actually finding the item to getting the reward took about 14 months.

I doubt very much you will wait another 3 years though. When I found my ring all them years back they put it on a valuation committee once they decided it was treasure (basically a load of experts sitting round a table trying to give it a valuation so I was told) Back then these committees took place 3 or 4 times a year. However, this could have all changed by now. This was just through my own experience and it was a long time ago!

Once they gave me a valuation and I was happy with it the local museum had to raise the funds to buy it.

As your find was a hoard the process may very well be quicker. I wouldn't like to say. Good luck anyway and hope it gets sorted soon. Thanks

This sounds like a question for The Don.

She has just been through this process, and it took an age.

You could always contact the Finder's Rep on the TVC to ask them to enquire for you. It used to be Harry Bain of the Searcher magazine. Good luck in sorting this one out as that length of time is excessive. [81/]

On my treasure case https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts ... id/1017805 It was delcared treasure by the coroner around the 27/10/21, was given a payment figure on the 10/08/22 and payment was made on the 18/11/2022.

Yes, well done! It must be quite an experience finding a hoard like that.

Hi Allectus
Thanks for the message.
All in, it's 350 coins - 270 whole and 80 halves. I'll attach a pic of a good proportion of them - this lot came up in one day, the rest over the following few days.
Thanks also to everyone who has replied, offering advice. Much appreciated.

Re the pic above, have these coins been chucked on to the top of an induction hob ?

Lol, I wouldn't say 'chucked'. I just emptied the out onto that when I got in from the field in order to take a quick snap for posterity.
That's the condition they came out of the ground in a few hours earlier.
Oh and it's not an induction hob - if that's your point? Just a bog standard electric cooker.
Thanks

[08/] I didn't have a point - it just looked modern that's all, more modern than mine.

Excellent find, well done/congrats. [81/]

aaah, sorry. I just thought you were highlighting something I'd done wrong.... like the cooker would come on, or something (is that how induction hobs work?)
That's a £200 special from the Hotpoint factory outlet, so nuffin fancy!
Have a good weekend
cheers

That is just mind blowing! Well done on finding them. Can you remember how far down they were and what was the signal like on your detector? Were they in a pot or vessel of some type?

Would you have a photo of them in situ? Well done again.
