Bronze coin with a hole & another find - Medieval?

Post by Panam39 »

I found these two items in a recently ploughed field in S.E France. They were both sitting on the surface, the coin physically on top and the other poking out some 75m away.

I believe both to be bronze, though the coin might be an alloy - it has considerable corrosion, which came off with a toothbrush, loosing much of the patina.

I've found french indo-china coins that typical had holes in them before however this appears much older, rougher and corroded, not to mention the hole seems to be a secondary addition to the design. It is roughly 2.2cm in diameter.

The other piece, a simple undecorated piece seems to be functional in nature, I imagine. i first thought it to be a late-medieval buckle, when I spied it, but the lack of articulated pin and the difference in size and structure has me stumped. The piece is roughly 5.1cm long.

I found these in a field that lies between two roman stone finds, and seems to contain some tegula fragments - can't be sure yet. In any case, in proximity to a medieval hamlet.

I've pictured them below, one on either side of a ruler, both sides of the object are shown - There's some bonus French Republic coins in the bottom that I forgot to move aside!

I'm afraid I can't be much help IDing them but you are certainly finding some interesting things down there in France.

Can I make a humble suggestion? It would probably help with identification to see the items photographed against a plain, white background. The current background is quite busy and also very similar in tone to a lot of artefacts, so they don't really stand out against it.
In Vino Veritas.

Thanks for your comment! I am indeed, so far solid evidence going back to the neolithic.

I hadn't considered that as an option, I will make sure to do so in future!

"At initial time of recording, it was noted that this Profanity-Filtered spur was similar to that found at Rhuddlan, Clwyd, Wales, from within a 10th Century grubenhaus (sunken floored building) fill (Ellis, 1994, pp 187-8, no 136, figure 17.7). However the Welsh example was made from iron, unlike this example which has been made from copper alloy, but the goad and the shape of the terminals are almost identical."

The brass piece might be part of a broken spur. The design below is a little different but I have found pieces similar to yours in the USA. I know the ones I've found date from about 1740 to the late 1800's. Great finds!
