Thought I would try on beach north of Liverpool ,so much rubbish in sand above high water mark
not been left by tide just by people who don't care about litter ,found coins near path.Went approx 50mts down the beach to a shingle patch found the other bits there ,not sure if the silver looking item is a coin it was 12ins down in black sand may be whats left of an old 3 penny piece

Don't give up, as In August this year I went to 'Treasure Chest Exhibition' at Chester town hall and there was one stand that was as good as a jewellers window , full of gold and silver old and newish and mainly all beach finds. I was mesmorised at the beautiful finds and when I was told it was mainly beach finds. It must of been worth thousands and i was looking at some of it thinking oooh I would have that gold bangle on and yes those earrings please, how different they were from the usual new stuff. So that gave me great hope that I may find something good on a beach. Best of luck I hope you get some nice stuff.

Thanks Gwawrer I prefare beaches as it's easier to dig and nice scenery first time iv'e been detecting on local beach there are large areas that you cannot detect on the rest are too far away ie Blackpool I may as well go to N Wales where I go to most times but it's a swine to park in Llandudno even with my disabled sticker ,I like to be able to get out of car right by beach .Can't walk far ,tried Llandulas but only found junk beach has been disturbed so much over years with sea defences tons of rubble must have been dumped before the large granite rocks were put there .Your name intrigues me does it mean daybreak or dawn in Welsh ? I'm of welsh descent my father was born in Denbigh and Iv'e still got relatives in Rhuddlan and Wrexham my wife comes from Anglesey ,still waiting to go down there detecting maybe next spring ---Chris

Hi Craghopper,
have you tried Crosby Beach? Parking is close to the sand and it isn't isolated.
Perhaps Talacre North Wales; one can drive to within ten or fifteen yards of the beach. The shops on Station Road, Talacre, are open all year round; as is the Smugglers Cafe ( no toilet in cafe but customers can use the pub toilet next door ). Amazingly, there is a cake shop on Station Road and that is even open on Sundays. There is a public toilet at Talacre but no disability toilets.
At Ainsdale near Southport, one used to be able to actually drive onto the beach. I trust that you always have a tide table with you?
As for junk!, I dig all targets. Maybe, just maybe, a piece of junk could be a clue to something else. If I discriminate out all iron, will I miss that saxon sword blade?
Keep at it and please continue to post your finds, even what you may see as junk.

Hi Chris yes it was Crosby beach I was on tried by baths first then moved to coastguard station car park, they are moving sand from by marina to formby so the top layer has gone but there might be something that was about 4ft down before sand was shifted going to give it a try this week weather permitting ,think you can still drive on beach ar Ainsdale but Formbys a no go areaChristoph1945 wrote:Hi Craghopper,

Good on yer Craghopper.
I am still waiting to get a chance to run down to Talacre and try out my CS4PI.
I was thinking of buying a Garrett Propointer but funds are rather low after buying the new detector. Maybe a stud finder would do the same job. Any ideas?

Hi yes Gwawrer does mean Dawn in Welsh. Talacre, great beach for finds. They do have loos other than the pub. You can park very near too , just make sure you check the high tides. Don't bother taking food its got to be that little bakery, not your normal run of the mill chains. Made and baked on the premises stuff, lovely steak pies, cheese and onion pasties, brownies, carrot cake you name it they have it. Nice guy who owns and runs it and i don't think they know that they a have a little following of people. I have said to him that you need to open a shop in Chester. Llandulas is mean't to be best with car park and club house behind you and go to the left thats where everything washes up. If it was Llandudno I would head to near the pier. Anglesey what a beautiful place, isolated, need the weather but always windy.

Thats the one , yes . Llanddulas has a history website, and on the hillside is the remains of a roman road and fort. That bottom road further along near the castle has seen some battles.
'In the reign of William the Conqueror, Hugh Lupus, on his march to invade Anglesey, passing through the defile of Cefn Ogo, was attacked by armed band of Welshmen, which had been posted there to intercept his progress, and of which, after a protracted battle, eleven hundred were left dead on the spot.'

Hi G yes I looked up history of Llandulas a few weeks ago but dont think you can detect on hillsides around area even if you could I would think it would be very hard going most of area is granite with little soil depth there are a lot of public footpaths also a hill fort at the top of the ridge not sure it's Roman I wonder what the local councils policy is on detecting on footpaths ,not actually digging just a bit of coin shooting and picking up any rubbish at same time .

Hi All,
Ainsdale sounds like a good option but make sure you have a tidetable and keep your wits about you. I remember an ambulance crew driving onto the beach and having lunch; the next thing they new, they were part of the coast guard. Darned ambulance finished up in three foot of salty water.
If I also remember correctly; the tide goes out a very long way and can sneek past you on its return. What about Southport beach? You used to be able to park close to the beach but things may have changed since I was last there.

You can still park close to Southport beach. If you park in the MacDonalds car park you can get a 2 hour ticket and pop back to put another on if you want longer. You are right about checking the tide tables, its good practice on any beach. As for Ainsdale there is a channel that can be seen quite clearly and as long as you know the tide times(check on BBC weather web site) its just a case of keeping an eye on the channel, if it starts to fill up move inshore.
