beach detecting on Norfolk coast

Post by egon999 »

We visit norfolk 2 or 3 times a year as the inlaws have a static caravan on a lovely woodland site near sherringham. I've broached the idea of taking the garrett with us this time as we spend quite a lot of time on various beaches when we go and my better half has raised no objections.

Could any of the norfolk forum members suggest some areas to visit? Most of the coastline in that area seems to be crown foreshore but in all the time I've been down that way I've never seen anyone out detecting on the beaches.

I'm more interested in finding older stuff rather than looking in the busier areas for lost modern items and thought that searching by the groynes at cromer or sherringham may be a good place to start. Its a family holiday so I'll only get a couple of chances to get out and didn't want to waste them on empty sites if possible

Many thanks

Although most of the coastline is marked as crown foreshore a lot of it is leased out to Natural England ( Ithink it is). but I'am pretty sure it's OK to detect from Weybourne around to Bacton, Walcot is not covered by crown forshore as far as I know but I have often seen people detecting there. I do know that Holkham and Wells next Sea are definate no go area's. I think most of the rest of the coastline around to Great Yarmouth is OK aswell although part of Winterton area is sssi. as you are nearby, Iv'e never tried myself butIt might be a good spot under the pier at cromer. Good luck

I love Norfolk - wnet to Mundesley on sea for annual holidays every year I can remember until I was 18 with parents. So I know most of that area really well. Like to go back occassionally and now have taken up detecting a years ago and not had a go at beach detecting yet so can combine the 2!

Norfolk plus beach detecting !!!

Any advice/update would be much appreciated.

Weybourne to bacton covers the area's we'd be visiting. Cromer, sherringham, runton, overstrand etc and yes I'd assumed the RSPB would bring in snipers if I started digging in the bird reserves. I'd probably avoid the pier area at cromer but I'll certainly look at walcot. Many thanks

Thanks. The link was really interesting. It looks like Eccles is not crown foreshore though, so I'm not sure how I'd be fixed for permission. FULLTIMER mentioned that some coastline down there is leased to Natural England and they seem to be well disposed to our hobby so that may be a starter. Thanks for the suggestion
