A quick question about the headphones conversion

Post by chessman »

Hi all
I'm considering the conversion from backphones to full over-ear. Either bought in or diy conversion (I'm pretty handy :) )

My one question is - when converted to full phones, am I correct in assuming that the sound only works in the one ear? May be a silly question but I couldn't find it covered on other threads.
I couldn't cope with only one ear working.

cheers

I presume the Deus' audio is mono. You have to wire the headphone speakers in series or parallel to the single sound channel. I would suggest series-connected (ie. in a chain), but parallel (both +ve terminals connected together, both -ve terminals together) should work, try both, see what you like.

:-/ It works in both ears! It's a doddle to convert to full headphones. You must use the existing speakers from the backphones though. The impedence is important! ::g

Just to add to HM's post, buy the normal xp back phones for about 12 quid and use the speakers, they are the same as the Deus.

i did mine so i could just slide the headphone control box thing off from backphone onto full headphone/ear defenders. basicly its just a set of full headphone with the mount for the control on the side

The Impedance is in fact not that important at all (within reason) if it was then all XP headphones would be the same, but they aren't. Backphones for instance use 32 Ohm whereas the WS 3 use 16 OHM.
The important aspect is the tone of the speakers (and whether you have got used to the tone from the supplied backphones). When using the Backphones the speaker is directly connected to your ear without any reverb but when you allow a cone for reverb to build up then the sound will totally change. This can be seen in headphones such as those from the States ie; Nugget Busters, Pro Golds, Grey Ghosts etc. All of these models share identical speakers, switches and potentiometers but the sound is slightly different in each soley because the outer "shells" are of a different shape.
So if you are converting be prepared for a slightly bassier finished product ;)

The impedance might not be an issue with the rest of the range, but we're talking about the Deus here. ;) When I converted mine I asked XP.They told me it was important. ::g

They told you porkies then. I'm not a 100% of the output impedance of the Deus but it's higher than 32 OHM. Ohm matching only becomes important if the sound scheme is intricate and there are no detectors on the market that have an audio circuit which you can get more information from by matching. If the 32 OHM aspect was the important one, then most headphones on the market would be fine as 99.9% are 32 Ohm. The tone is what you are looking for that's why the other XPs use differing Ohm speakers to try and match the tone. Deus speakers cost 75p each, I'm sure if they were a critical piece of the kit they would be a lot more expensive.
