I regularly detect on a shingle beach, just a slightly different technique.
When you dig for a signal the shingle edge of the hole tends to slide back into the hole, so its a more difficult to find your target.
I use a plastic scoop (pet food scoop) to pick up a quantity of shingle and the wave this back and forth over the MD coil - if the target is in the scoop no need to dig further.
I also use the GPP to narrow down the area to scoop up
