Beach coins?

Post by claybreaker88 »

Hi as said in another post I have been going to a small beach which from local historians I know inform me that it was a very busy spot years ago, thus far I have taken some 30-40 coins of this beach and all of them have been found top of the beach high tide point,so assuming coins dropped in other parts of the beach get washed up to those areas of high tide in time?.

Hi Paul,
I do a bit of beach detecting and i find that it depends on alot of factors as to where the coins end up. It depends on how ferocious the tide is, the density of the coin, where in the beach it has been lost and the composition of the sand in that particualr area of the beach. I have been on other metal detecting forums and the consensus on them is that all these factors play a part in where finds come to rest. There is also alot of talk amongst detectorists about little recesses in the sand close to bedrock that hold alot of finds together. Chances are if you found 20-30 coins close to one another there is more waiting to be found there another day. It seems to be popular for detectorists to search just after a bad storm as its said to strip sand on the beach back to bedrock and leave finds that were previously out of detecting range more exposed allowing them to be found. What part of NI ae you from? I'm previously from Donegal but now living in Belfast.
