Golden Moment On The Beach

Post by albertwybert »

I went down to the beach today and started on a patch near the water's edge as there was a two or three foot drop where the sand had been washed away.

After about a minute I found a rusty 1p then two more in quick succession, then my little Garrett Ace 150 nearly blew my ears off ! with a great bell tone, so I looked down and saw what I thought was a very shiney 1p on the wet sand.
When I picked it up I my heart missed a few beats as I had an 1891 Victoria Half Sovereign in my hand :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D .

Not a bad start to the year!

I feel sorry for the person who lost it. They must have felt sick and have been looking for it for ages, I know I would have!

Does anyone know what the buying power of a half sovereign was in 1891, or putting it another way what would it have been worth in today's money?

According to Wiki....''One Sovereign in 1910 had the purchasing power of about £68.00 GBP today''
