Detech Ultimate coil falsing fix

Post by chefphones »

Hi All
a few people have reported a problem with the 13" Ultimate coil beginning to false suddenly after working fine.
This problem seems to be more prevalent on the Minelab Etrac but this could be purely down to the fact that there are more Etracs fitted with this coil than any other make. This is further confused by the fact that it seems, at present at least, that it's only newer Etracs, those made by Codan in Malaysia.
The problem and fix seems counter intuitive due to it's location and it's effect.
You will need a roll of PTFE tape and you need to cut a piece aprox 3cm long, now cut the width in half and wrap this around the socket of the Etrac, as close to the body of the machine as you can so that you now have the top third of the screw thread covered in tape. Now screw on your coil plug and your done.
It seems on the surface at least a strange area to cause this problem as it has very little movement, enclosed as it is by the upper shaft and being at the short end of the arc of swing but the fix works.
If you have a similar problem on other machines then it 's worth trying this but please let me know the make if you can ::g
It would be easy for me to point the finger at the socket of the newer Etracs as the culprit but I've not heard of a similar problem with SEF coils so at the moment it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other ;)

this problem has occurred on numerous occasions while I have been detecting and occurs at the end of my left swing when my right forearm hits the front of my torso, infact I was just talking about this yesterday with Johny Blaze who runs the same machine and coil as myself but has not had this problem, its more of an annoyance rather than a hindrance or hampering of my hunts as the coil will and does do the job regardless of the falsing with no problems.
I have now carried out the fix and will let you know of the results after my next hunt ::g

Thanks for the tip chef, I will try this fix and see how it goes.
Just another question if you don't mind :D ...... does the coil wire entering the coil have pins if I remove the screw fitting? The reason I ask is that I have found the small retaining nut getting a bit loose on occasion and was thinking of taking it off and sealing it at this point before refitting but didn't want to chance it in case I stretched something and damaged it.
Otherwise I find this to be a fab coil that is a permanent fixture now on my E trac.
Cheers
Ger.

I wouldn't advice anyone to take the lower strain relief off, the contacts and wires are well sealed in resin and you won't be achieving anything by doing so. Just finger tighten the nut and all should be OK ::g

Thanks for the fast reply, glad I didn't undo it now as I would hate to be without this coil.
Hand tighten it will be ::g
