Spent a very pleasant 3 hours on Seaton beach today. Very low tide and loads of rocks to rummage around. Found a George V ha'penny, 3 fishing weights and this odd little gold coloured thing. Detector give a deep grunty signal (as it does for gold), and out popped this odd shaped thing. No idea if its brass or gold or something else. How can I tell (without buying acid). Chucked it in some white vinegar and its stayed the same colour. Its also got some weight to it.

it appears to be a lump of alloy of some type perhaps its fools gold but my feeling is it a mixed alloy

Non magnetic, but very hard, so I'm guessing its brass

A good way of testing gold for women is to rub some foundation on your arm, then rub gold on it...it will leave a black mark, try it with a gold ring ....other metal wont....i saw this somewhere last year,i havnt tried it....run out of foundation
if it works let me know and i'll pop to boots lol
