Talacre puzzler?

Post by Christoph1945 »

My friend Richie and I have been detecting the sands at Talacre for some considerable time now and neither of us has ever turned up a Victorian coin. I have had a George III coin, George V coins, George VI coins, Elizabeth II pre decimal coins, and plenty of Elizabeth II decimal coins; but never a Victorian.

Have any of you chaps turned up Victorian coins at Talacre?

No Chris but I know someone who found a lovely hammered on that beach and it was Rhuddlan mint, which is just down the coast . ::g
Its better out of the ground and in your hand for the history or monetary value rather than left in the ground to rot doing nothing for anyone.

Hello,
could be land/beach useage or popularity through the ages.Or that it`s well hidden or localised or been moved by the sand..just have to keep searching or move on.I wonder the same about some land I detect on,the earliest thing to date I`ve found is a single Roman brooch, yesterday I found a 1956 half crown. There`s quite a few Georgian and Viccy coins and I`ve had a handfull of hammered the earliest being around 1300 so you`d think there would be finds from all ages..I would love to find some early milled silver or more Roman stuff or some medieval artifacts..perhaps I need to intensify my research and get a bigger coil for the pasture...

regards

Hi Chris,
I already knew about the hammered and I also know someone who found a very old trading token down here but Victorian...........not a sausage! Maybe it's a matter for better research and breaking out the CS4PI and moving closer to the low tide line? :)

Perhaps you are not searching in the right area? If you`re finding pre-decimals then you should be finding Victorian among them.It was not unusual to have Victorian bronze coins in change up to 1970.

Ah ha, I think that the penny has just dropped; if you will pardon the pun. I should have spotted this last year. On occasions one can see where a high tide has cut away a section of the dunes at their base. Within weeks, if not days, the upper section of the dunes slip down and take the place of the sand that has been washed away from their base. As the upper sand slides down it brings with it any coins that have been sitting in the dunes at various depths.

A quick look at some old photographs will show that the sand dunes at Talacre have receded considerably over the years and perhaps the beach area where the Victorians sat and caroused was some way out from the present day dunes. If this is the case, Victorian coins will have gone deeper and been drawn eastwards and seaward.

On my next visit, I will be breaking out the CS4PI and moving onto the wet sand but will then have the plentiful scrap to contend with. Lack of discrimination on the CS4PI can be a curse and the EuroAce hates salty wet sand! :)

theres a few photos on here from the 60s looking at these the dunes went as far as the lighthouse dont no if you have already seen these

yes richie still hit the beaches havent taken to land maybe one day
have had quite a few coins but only 1 victorian that was well worn just no it was the young head
other than that decimal money 1 ring and bits of junk jewelry
and mountains of scrap but enjoy the day out
went talacre when it was hot to see where the people was hanging out
most was sat at the high tide line spent about an hour gabbing to a chap who detects there often told him get a heavy duty sand sifter as he was searching with his hands after he dug
great tool and a fiver well spent
