If you are on v3.2 then there's an option to have the numbers remain constant across all programs for a bit more consistency. Read the manual, unlike most other manuals it's actually useful.

Thanks
Check page 27 of the manual. The section where it says:
Ferrous/Non-Ferrous target strength (or depth indicator),
at the left strength of the ferrous, at the right strength of
the good target.
The horseshoe thing is called the 'profile' mode.

Thank-you all for your replies ... on the subject of green waste the manure is supplied by another farmer, and I could see that it was typical farmyard stuff, with chopped up bits of MDFthrown in,, so deffo didnt look like Green waste, and checked with the farmer, do you put Green waste on the land? "No" was the answer.
Now the horse show thing...
So does it work like this?
Left for iron, Right for high conductivity
small black blob = deep, big black blob = shallow?
Also didn't do very well on the pin-pointing, though i have seen a trick using the "top" end of the coil to get the spot exactly... Are there any good A-Z videos for Deus beginners out there?

You dont normally get chopped up MDF in manure OA, not in typical farmyard stuff and definitely not enough to contaminate a whole field sounds like Contaminated Green Waste
Do you remember saying how it wasnt a problem and we should all stop complaining about green waste ??????
Are you still not willing to sign the petition

'Wiggle' the coil left-right-left, etc, fairly rapidly over the target, about half a foot at a time. Mentally draw a line on the ground where the good target sound is loudest, then turn 90 degrees and do it again. The target will be under the centre of the coil in the middle of your mental 'X'. Or if you have a poor memory just mark a line with the tip of your spade. On small 1p sized targets, with practise, you can pin-point them dead on by using this method.
I'm talking out of experience of using v2.0 but I'm assuming you have v3.2, I can't see why it would be any different but you never know. I'm sure someone else will correct me if this is wrong for that version.

If the petition were on the basis that Green waste spoils MD activities its a YES!!! the trouble io have is that it comes from an anti-pollution stand point, and although it now looks like there could be an issue with pollution, it doesn't have anything to do with me... therefore I wont be signing... just yet!!
edit; In short I am happy to sign if the petition mentions MD... but we dont get mention!!! Why?

Spent the past hour watching a good selection and there is nothing out there for a XP newbie ... like demoing each mode... comparing and critiquing signals... sawa great vid of a guy doing his iron test bed,,, but i am looking for a demo of a silver and gold bed,,, So really what I am looking for is an "Idiots guide"!!! for an idiot!!!
get out with the machine, pick your programme to suit your permission, stick with it and all of a sudden the tones become a lot easier to decipher.there is so much on the deus you can go round in circles, stick to the basics and learn the machine and the tones good luck

OA, The petition is being driven by Metal detecting organisations ... the NCMD being the most influential, I personaly want to protect not only my beloved passion and hobby, but our as yet unfound & undiscovered Heritage and history.
"Green waste will be the death of Metal detecting" slowly but surely hard gained permissions are becoming undetectable waste lands"
Let's make one thing absolutely crystal clear, this problem being spread all over 'permissions' farmers once green & pleasant lands is NOT 'Green Waste' .. it's Industrial waste on an Industrial scale.
BTW 'Green waste' was initialy supposed to be the 'Green waste' from your garden green waste bins, and the food slops left out for the council to collect, that waste was again 'supposed' to be collected, graded and shipped for farmers to spread as cheap compost .. just how it morphed into the hundreds of thousands of tonnes of contaminated, toxic metal laden industrial waste spread on an industrial scale is anyones guess
One interesting point to be noted, if this Council 'Green waste' is really 'Green' .. how come no council spreads it over there own lands?
Some of the fields i go to are now covered with this foil backed formica a real pain as it has been chopped up into 5np size bits i will dig hundreds of bits in a day.
