First time -changes on the way?
After detecting beaches for almost 2 years, today I was asked to show my crown estates detecting licence to a warden. He was a bit snotty at first when I said it was in my car on my phone.and said it should be on your person ....anyway went back to car and got it and he was fine then.I asked if something had happened there for him to ask for my licence. He said no ,but there were big changes on the way ,though he didnt elaborate on that statement. He said in part it was to get rid of the "get rich quick" brigade and to know who was who as regards detecting on the beach.Seemed bit odd to me and im wondering if there really are changes in the pipeline..i guess a fee for the licence would be one possibility,or maybe restricting numbers on beach at same time perhaps. He said these"changes" would affect all beaches and not the just one I was on in time. Any ideas?

it would cost them more to police the whole uk shore line than what they'd get in licence fee's .years ago they had the idea of fishing licence for sea anglers .theyll be charging you for going on the beaches next plus swimming fee.

If you get a permit they know who's who. So I wonder if they would try to catch non permit holders. To do that it would have to be self funding ie charge for permit. Then there's the impossible task of policing it. I once had a run in with the ea while fishing I had my license but he was just being a nazi and was totally wrong. There's nothing on the crown site

You don't need a Crown Estates Permit to Detect on all beaches ,, only for beaches Owned by the Crown estate

I'm not a regular beach goer but it makes a change and is always welcome on holiday. I too have never been asked for my permit (only been asked twice for my ea licence in probably 30 years), and it wouldn't bother me either. I wonder how many people have been detecting for years and never got a permit? Apart from the crown requesting so, what is the purpose of the permit? As we were on the subject I checked mine and it needed doing in the next few days..just done it no probs.

Sound like it was privately owned or leased beach. No doubt the jobsworth thought you were finding lots of goodies - just need to show him the junk and knackered coins and that would put his mind at rest as that is the usual fare.
I asked in case it was a beach in the SW owned by Prince Charles.

Hi Dougie,
Based on some personal experiences whilst detecting in North Wales I would be interested to learn the answers to one or two questions.
Were you detecting alone?
Were you detecting the sands at Talacre?
Was this guy wearing a ranger's uniform?
If he wasn't wearing a ranger's uniform, did he show you some id?
Are you aware that some detectorists are detecting in the dunes at Talacre?
And did you know that a photographer was hit over the head and had all is expensive
photographic gear stolen whilst walking back to his car at Talacre?
