My first week

Post by Greg3 »

I thought I'd share the results of my first week of detecting. All found on a nearby beach and using my Garrett 250 in relic mode (still getting the hang of it and digging every signal so I've not included the many, many beer cans and other bits of junk I dug up and binned!) I got a few modern coins too!

Pre-decimal Coins (the oldest being an 1899 penny)

Military? A button, a blank round and a .303(?) cartridge (I think it's a drill/dummy one)

Odd but interesting bits of metal (both seem to be decorated) Belt buckles maybe?

More interesting bits (the Butlin's badge is dated 1947 and the tube of suntan cream I think is from the 1950s/60s)

And my favourite so far... A silver Claddagh ring (I'd never even heard of a claddagh ring until I tried to find out what this was)

It was also my first attempt at cleaning a find. I used baking soda and foil to remove the tarnish (a tip I found on here) and was amazed at the result!!

Anyway, thanks for looking. Hopefully I'll soon have some more to show!!

the center 9mm split ended round looks to me like a simunition round, as the tip looks like it is still intact be careful as that is most likely a live round, it has a live charge in the base with a paint pellet head on it, its used for live firing exercises and could easily take out an eye if discharged

Nice selection of finds, the military button looks like a British Army General Service button ::g

My first thought was that it might still be live but it has got a firing pin mark on the base so I assumed it was safe... If it is live does it need to be handed in?

technically if its live it should be handed in, however if there is already a strike mark in the base its probably a misfire if it is a simunition, blanks are normally either wax plugged or theyre crimped and waxed if I remember rightly (been a while since ive handled blank 9mm, ex military armourer)

if it was my find with a strike mark on the base id keep hold of it, just make sure its not stored in direct sunlight, a bit over cautious but when it comes to live ammunition you can never be too careful, a blank round will pop your eye easily let alone a simunition.

Thanks for the advice... As you say, better safe than sorry. I'll make sure it's stored safely.
Cheers

Its an 8mm blank round made for replica blank firers, its to long for the width to be a 9mm round. ::g

they use the same cap ends as the simunition, I haven't come into contact with the 8mm blank rounds before, wouldn't the split end be more distorted if the round had fired though?

also well spotted, ive looked at the image on my laptop rather than my phone, I can see the end is set into the round rather than proud of the round like the simunition, didn't look that way on my phone so I stand corrected. good haul overall though
